Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre is seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic, and positive person to join us as a groom. You will be someone who enjoys interacting with all sorts of people and equines, and being part of a diverse community.

We provide riding lessons for disabled and non-disabled persons, stable management and care training, and therapeutic activities.

This is a varied role which provides an insight into different aspects of coaching and development, where every member of the team is integral to the benefit of our service users. You will be caring for our herd of inner city horses, ponies and donkeys and facilitating a unique environment for inner city children to learn to ride and care for all equines in our yard.

  • Turning out/catching in

  • Grooming

  • Tacking up for lessons/untacking

  • Haying, watering, feeding

  • Confident, safe and empathetic horse handling

  • Leading and side walking in lessons.

  • Keeping our horses and ponies fit for work is also part of the role, this will include ground work and riding (if suitable for the candidate) to school them and keep them happy in their work.

We work primarily with children, many with additional needs, so a sensitive and empathetic attitude is required. You will also work closely with volunteers with varying degrees of experience. Your role will support a wide variety of volunteers, riders, and other participants, providing training and confidence building.

A willingness to learn and develop is key. You will have opportunities to train further in horse care qualifications (such as the BHS stages) and coaching through the BHS and RDA pathways. For the right candidate coaching opportunities will be available. Previous coaching experience is greatly welcomed.
